Reliable quantification of the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) for pyramidal ⟨c+a⟩ slip is essential for rational alloy design yet remains experimentally challenging because readily activated basal and prismatic slip can obscure the contribution in both single-crystal and polycrystalline tests. Here, Mg-Y alloys are used as a model system to establish an experimentally constrained framework. The CRSS values of basal slip, prismatic slip and {10-12} twining are independently measured by orientation-specific micropillar compression and incorporated into a single-crystal crystal-plasticity model that explicitly accounts for competition among relevant deformation modes. The CRSS of ⟨c+a⟩ slip is then identified by fitting the simulated mechanical responses to experimental stress-strain curves from micropillars oriented to favor ⟨c+a⟩ slip. The framework is subsequently applied to quantify the effect of Y on ⟨c+a⟩ slip resistance. Comparisons of the relative resistance of basal, prismatic and pyramidal slip systems provide a quantitative basis for ductility-oriented Mg alloy design. |
