Dy-free isotropic neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets were made by spark plasma sintering (SPS) using melt-spun powder. The magnets exhibit high coercivity but relatively low remanence and maximum energy product. The microstructure of the magnet was characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The domain structure was imaged using Lorentz TEM. The formation mechanism of the blocky amorphous Nd-rich regions in the SPSed NdFeB magnet is explained considering the special sintering conditions during SPS and the microstructural features of the initial powder. The controversial formation mechanism of the fine and coarse two-zone structure frequently observed in SPSed NdFeB magnets is discussed and it is demonstrated that the growth of the initial grains (with difference in size) of the melt-spun ribbon has caused the formation of the two-zone structure. The initial magnetization and the coercivity of the magnet are correlated to the microstructure obtained from spark plasma sintering. |
