| Abstract Scope |
Magnesium is classified as a critical raw material for the European Union (EU) owing to its essential role in transport, aerospace, and renewable energy technologies, and the EU’s reliance on Chinese imports (~97%). Thermodynamic analyses indicate that reducing agents such as Si, FeSi, Al, and CaC2 can be used in the metallothermic reduction of calcined dolomite under vacuum. However, the choice of reducing agent today is influenced by both environmental and techno-economic constraints. The traditional Pidgeon process, which covers for 90% of global magnesium production, does not require sustainability targets due to its high energy consumption and significant carbon emissions (28 kg CO₂/kg Mg). This study aims to produce "green magnesium" by using aluminum dross which is an industrial waste, as a reducing agent instead of the FeSi used in the traditional Pidgeon process that entails high energy consumption and significant carbon emissions. |
