| Abstract Scope |
Thermomechanical processing is widely employed to improve the mechanical performance of cast magnesium alloys and nanocomposites; however, the underlying microstructural evolution during the early stages of hot rolling remains poorly understood. In this work, the early-stage deformation and subsequent recrystallisation behaviour of a SiC nanowhisker-reinforced AZ91 magnesium nanocomposite were investigated using a combination of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), synchrotron-based three-dimensional X-ray diffraction (3D-XRD), and diffraction contrast tomography (DCT). This complementary 2D-3D characterisation strategy enables local particle-deformation interactions to be interpreted within the context of bulk grain-scale microstructural evolution. The results show that low-volume-fraction SiC nanowhiskers have limited influence on deformation twinning but are closely associated with deformation band formation and enhanced recrystallisation during subsequent annealing. The findings provide new insight into the role of ceramic reinforcements during hot rolling and offer guidance for designing thermomechanical processing routes for high-performance magnesium matrix nanocomposites. |
