| Abstract Scope |
Scandium is an alloying element that improves the properties of aluminum alloys. This paper discusses methods for producing Al-Sc alloys, with a focus on the commonly used approach of adding Al-Sc master alloy. Typically, an Al master alloy (containing 2wt.%Sc) is used for this purpose. In this study, we investigated the dissolution behavior of Al-2wt.%Sc master alloy into pure Al to produce an Al-0.2wt.%Sc alloy. Contrary to some industry notions that suggest long dissolution times, our results showed a fast dissolution process. A dissolution time of just one minute was sufficient for a complete dissolution. The microstructure changed significantly from micron-size Al3Sc particles in the master alloy to much finer particles in the final alloy. The Al3Sc particles were evenly distributed throughout the matrix, even without the use of manual stirring. These findings have practical implications for improving the efficiency in the cast house operations aiming to produce Al-Sc alloys. |
