Abstract Scope |
A little more than 10 years ago, since Prof. Michel Barsoum introduced to us the amazing properties of MAX phases, our neutron scattering group at the NRCN embarked on a journey to identify, and characterize magnetism in this family of compounds. Naturally, we used neutron scattering, the best probe for the task, as the main characterization method, but SQUID magnetization, heat capacity, ac-susceptibility, muon-spin rotation, and NMR measurements vastly contributed to the search. After limited success to find spontaneous bulk magnetic ordering in “regular” MAX phases, the excellent discovery of the iMAX phases by the Linköping group at 2017, followed by the introduction of lanthanides to the M site (by the same group), paved the way for synthesis of exciting and amazingly complex magnetic systems. I will give an update on the progress of understanding magnetism in these compounds and introduce some new finding on their high magnetic field properties. |
