In Mexico, iron ore mining reached an annual production of 4,902 million metric tons. Magnetite (Fe3O4) is one of the most important oxides. During magnetic separation, some unwanted materials become trapped in the magnetic concentrator. Therefore, this study proposes flotation as a method for separating magnetite using bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (BEF) as a collector. The highest flotation efficiency achieved was 83% under the following conditions: pH 8.4, 100 g/t frother, 250 g/t BEF, and 90 µm particles. FTIR analysis identified the species responsible for flotation, revealing Fe–O bond bands at 451 cm⁻¹, 560 cm⁻¹, and 680 cm⁻¹ corresponding to lepidocrocite, akaganeite, and magnetite, respectively; the surface formation of these species and the chemisorption of BEF impart the hydrophobicity required for particle recovery. BEF adsorption was detected via bands at 1044 cm⁻¹ and 1525 cm⁻¹, attributed to P–O–C and P=O bonds, respectively. |
