Abstract Scope This study investigates the dry sliding wear behavior of two low-carbon steels alloyed with copper: LCu (0.6 wt.% Cu) and HCu (1.1 wt.% Cu). Both steels were homogenized at 1250°C, forged (60% reduction), and quenched from 920°C. A pin-on-disc tribometer was used to evaluate wear under 10 N and 50 N loads at a constant sliding speed of 1 m/s. Superior wear resistance was observed for specimens quenched from 920°C and tested under 50 N, attributed to the formation of a thin, compact, and adherent Fe₃O₄ layer (0.5–2 µm). In contrast, specimens subjected to 10 N normal load exhibited higher wear volume due to brittle FeO layer formation, promoting three-body wear. The study also incorporates surface roughness parameters into predictive equations for wear-induced temperature rise using Greenwood and Williamson model, revealing a strong correlation between asperity features, oxide formation dynamics, and tribological performance across varying quench temperatures and Cu content.
