Control of secondary inclusions during solidification is essential for improving steel quality, yet their formation mechanisms remain poorly understood because direct observation in molten steel is difficult. Using our previously developed fluorescence imaging technique with a transparent succinonitrile–water-based model alloy, secondary inclusion behavior during directional solidification was investigated. Lumogen Yellow served as both a fluorescent tracer and a model secondary inclusion, allowing quantitative visualization of solute concentration and inclusion precipitation. Solute enrichment caused by microsegregation was observed between primary dendrite arms toward the dendrite roots, followed by precipitation of Lumogen Yellow, which was interpreted using classical nucleation theory. The subsequent formation, growth, motion, and engulfment of the model inclusions were directly observed. Differences in inclusion behavior under low and high solid fractions were analyzed, providing further insight into the evolution of secondary inclusions during solidification. |
