| Abstract Scope |
Carbon steel is one of the most commonly used materials today due to its low cost and versatile mechanical properties, making it suitable for a wide range of applications, from general machinery to offshore platforms. The main limitation of carbon steel is its degradation in aggressive environments. One of the most traditional approaches to addressing these limitations is the use of synthetic anticorrosive additives in paints. However, their high toxicity has led to the search for more environmentally friendly and sustainable alternatives. Therefore, this study investigates the addition of Kappaphycus alvarezii seaweed biomass as a natural filler in a commercial epoxy coating to protect AISI 1020 steel against acidic environments.Modified films were prepared by adding the organic filler, and their degradation rate was quantified using gravimetric mass-loss tests. The anticorrosive mechanism and morphological changes on the surface are analyzed using potentiodynamic polarization curves and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). |
