| Abstract Scope |
Electric field has been shown to significantly improve sintering behavior of ceramics. In this talk, we will present an overview on the influence of electric field on sintering and production of defects (such as dislocations and stacking faults) in single-phase and dual-phase ceramics. These defects have profound impact on mechanical properties of ceramic materials. For instance, flash sintering has been shown to improve plasticity in ceramic materials that are often brittle at room temperature if prepared by conventional sintering methods. We will also discuss other techniques that can readily induce plasticity in ceramic materials at room temperature. The implications of these studies will be discussed for the design and manufacturing of future ceramics with improved plasticity at room temperature. |
