| Abstract Scope |
Welding Titanium to Tantalum can be challenging due to large differences in melting temperature and thermal conductivity. Vacuum furnace brazing avoids certain welding challenges by melting only the filler in a relatively clean environment, reducing embrittlement from interstitial elements. Certain fillers have the potential to significantly improve material properties of a joint and offer exceptional wetting behavior; however, the filler must wet to both base materials while also avoiding brittle intermetallic formation. The goal of this work is to understand which filler metals can be used to braze a dissimilar joint of pure Ti to pure Ta. Sessile drop experiments for six different Ag-based fillers were completed on Ti and Ta base plates. The wetting behavior of each filler, as well as the formation of brittle intermetallic phases, were investigated. Characterization techniques were utilized to determine spreadability of the filler, microstructure, and composition across the interfaces. |
