| Abstract Scope |
High-pressure die-cast (HPDC) AZ91 magnesium (Mg) alloys are increasingly utilized in the production of automotive components to support vehicle lightweighting initiatives. A critical barrier to their widespread implementation is their susceptibility to corrosion and oxidation. In this study, we implemented a solid phase cold spray coating process to deposit Zn and Al coatings on AZ91 Mg substrates. A metallurgical bond is obtained at the coating-substrate interfaces as visualized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Corrosion tests for both coatings showed that the volume of evolved hydrogen from coated AZ91 is substantially lower than uncoated AZ91, indicating lower corrosion rate. Finally, in-situ micro-tensile tests indicated that the bond strength at the Zn-Mg interface was ~125 MPa and at Al-Mg interface ~146 MPa, with a mixed-mode of failure observed. Cold spray thus offers a scalable and cost-effective coating method to locally enhance Mg’s surface properties and thus the overall performance. |
