| Abstract Scope |
Increasing recycled content in aluminium alloys is essential for reducing the carbon intensity of aluminium production, but it introduces new challenges in alloy design and processing. In compositionally complex recycled alloys, properties are strongly influenced by transient solidification phenomena such as crystal formation, impurity redistribution and microstructural defect evolution, which are difficult to infer from post-solidification characterisation alone.
We will discuss how in situ synchrotron X-ray imaging can provide a powerful route to reveal these events directly and convert real-time observations into design-relevant insight. Two case studies will be presented. First, X-ray radiography, atomistic simulations and computational fluid dynamics are combined to probe how selected minor-element additions promote nucleation of primary α-Al crystals via liquid short-range order, suggesting a new pathway towards grain-structure control. Second, X-ray radiography is used to reveal Fe-rich intermetallic phase evolution in high-Fe recycled alloys, and to identify processing windows for more benign phases and morphologies. |
