| Abstract Scope |
Ultrasonically assisted (UA) laser processing has shown potential to modify melt pool behavior and solidification; however, its underlying mechanisms remain insufficiently understood due to limited direct observations. In this study, the effects of ultrasonic vibration on the laser processing of Ti-6Al-4V sheets were investigated using in-situ synchrotron X-ray imaging. UA laser experiments were performed with ultrasonic excitation (20 kHz, ~26 μm amplitude). In-situ X-ray imaging directly captured melt pool evolution, revealing UA effects on the melt pool geometry and melt flow dynamics, and providing direct evidence of acoustic cavitation and streaming phenomena, which have been a hypothetical conjecture in current literature on UA-additive manufacturing (AM). Post-mortem microstructure characterization using SEM and EBSD further evaluates the UA effects on the Ti-6Al-4V solidification structure. The combined in-situ and ex-situ results provide a comprehensive understanding of UA effects in laser melt processing, serving as fundamentals in design and development of various UA-AM processes. |
