| Abstract Scope |
The martensite start temperature (Ms) defines the onset of the β→α″ martensitic transformation in Ti-Nb-Ta alloys. Although this characteristic temperature has important implications for the resulting microstructure and, consequently, mechanical properties, its accurate determination remains challenging owing to the rapid cooling rates typically required to promote martensite formation, which often exceed the capabilities of conventional thermal analysis techniques. In this study, synchronous in-situ high-temperature laser scanning confocal microscopy (HT-LSCM) combined with differential thermal analysis (DTA) was employed to determine the Ms of a Ti-20Nb-6Ta alloy (wt.%). Simultaneous thermal and microstructural measurements enabled the direct correlation between thermal events and the onset of martensitic transformation. The influence of cooling rate on phase formation and mechanical properties was evaluated. The results show that cooling rate strongly affects microstructural evolution and alloy hardness. The proposed HT-LSCM/DTA methodology provides an effective approach for determining Ms while simultaneously revealing the transformation mechanisms during cooling. |
