| Abstract Scope |
Laminated object manufacturing (LOM) is rarely used for fabricating functional structures, as most additive manufacturing methods incorporate nanomaterials into polymer matrices rather than as primary structural building blocks. In this study, carbon nanotube (CNT) buckypapers fabricated by vacuum filtration were used as primary feedstock for a digitally controlled LOM process, enabling assembly of geometrically complex three-dimensional CNT architectures from CAD data. Mechanical, electrical, and thermal characterization across individual, 3-layer, and 5-layer configurations revealed that LOM-printed structures achieved higher stiffness (Young's modulus up to ~830 MPa) while manually stacked equivalents retained higher tensile strength (~12-14 MPa). Electrical conductivity decreased from ~75 S/cm for individual buckypaper to 46.29 S/cm and 43.43 S/cm for LOM-printed structures. Electromechanical testing confirmed strong interlayer coupling under compression. A finned heat sink and gyroid TPMS structure demonstrated geometric versatility, establishing LOM as a scalable route for multifunctional CNT architectures. |
