| Abstract Scope |
Biochar(BC) is a carbon medium created by pyrolysis. Due to its porous nature and various functional groups, biochar can serve as an adsorbent material to remove water and air contaminants in an environmentally friendly manner. The Great Basin Desert has abundant biomass materials, which is currently facing increased wildfire risk due to highly flammable invasive species overtaking native flora. In this study, these biomass materials common to the Great Basin Desert were collected to examine their potential to serve as BC precursor materials. Pyrolysis via an atmospheric furnace was optimized to produce BCs with the most favorable material characteristics for carbon dioxide adsorption. The BCs’ materials properties were studied through Fourier-transform Infrared(FTIR) Spectroscopy, Carbon Hydrogen Nitrogen and Oxygen(CHNO) analysis, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller(BET) surface area analysis, and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM). The adsorption potential of the BCs was determined through column testing and a thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA). |
