Abstract Scope The MnAl L10, τ, ferrimagnetic phase is promising commercially if its metastability is resolved. In MnAlCu, an ε-phase immiscibility gap at 3–6 at.% Cu produces two τ-phases of which τ2 from ε2 may have improved thermal stability. To probe τ2, MnAl with 8 at.% Cu was studied for structure, phase transformations, microstructure, and magnetism. The high Cu additions was found to deepen the ε→β-Mn+γ2 eutectoid reaction to at least 453 K, with ε2 transforming to τ2 via a two-step martensitic mechanism at 453 K. The τ2-phase shows improved kinetic stability below the martensite precipitation temperature of 750 K. The magnetic domains were found to follow the martensite plates with a magnetocrystalline anisotropy comparable to Cu free τ MnAl. These results offer insight into the mechanisms by which the MnAl τ-phase can be modified to improve its phase formation ability and increase its thermal stability towards a potential commercial application.
