| Abstract Scope |
Fatigue assessment of corroded welded joints increasingly relies on finite element models built from 3D surface scans, yet scan-based modeling is costly and rarely available for structures in service, so idealized corrosion geometries are used instead, with unquantified consequences for accuracy. This study measures how much geometric fidelity such models need. A modeling chain based on the effective notch stress approach is verified through mesh convergence at the IIW reference radius, then validated against published fatigue tests on corroded S355 welded joints with scanned geometries, measured residual stresses, and observed crack locations. Idealized pit representations of increasing simplicity are benchmarked against the scan-based reference models, quantifying the error each simplification introduces into predicted local stresses and their locations. Fidelity guidance for practitioners follows, showing which geometric simplifications preserve fatigue-relevant accuracy within stated tolerances and which discard it. |
