Abstract Scope |
This study investigates the fatigue-induced void evolution in polymer components manufactured using fusion-based material extrusion (MEX) additive manufacturing or commonly known as fused filament fabrication (FFF). Compact tension specimens were manufactured with varying extrusion multipliers (0.90, 0.95 and 1.0) to simulate varying amounts of as-manufactured porosity, as well as [0⁰/90⁰] cross-ply orientations. A series of experiments were conducted to evaluate how the void characteristics (content, location, shape and size; quantified via X-Ray CT) evolve throughout the fatigue life of FFF components, as well as how those changes influence subsequent fracture and fatigue performance. Digital image correlation quantified variation in the strain field evolution around the crack tip of the compact tension specimens. Results indicate that the interbead voids evolve with crack propagation, which effectively influences future fracture and fatigue performance. This study enhances the understanding of the effect of void characteristics on the bulk functional response of FFF polymers. |
