| Abstract Scope |
Motivated by false-bottom formation beneath summer sea ice, this work examines solute-driven phase transformations in gradient-prepared Al–Cu alloys as a controllable binary benchmark. Samples with a macroscopic concentration gradient are exposed to nominally isothermal conditions so that phase evolution is driven primarily by solute redistribution rather than by external cooling. The study focuses on two regimes: a partially molten state, where a mushy region persists and microstructure evolves locally, and a fully liquid state, which provides a reference for concentration relaxation. Concentration profiles, phase fractions, and arrested microstructures are analyzed together with a one-dimensional moving-boundary model and a coarse-grained phase-field description. The results establish an experimentally accessible route for studying mushy-zone evolution, interface motion, and phase transformation kinetics in a system relevant to broader solidification problems involving coupled transport and moving phase boundaries. |
