| Abstract Scope |
Rapid mechanical assessment methods are essential to support efficient industrial production of aluminium alloy extrusion products. Profilometry-based indentation plastometry (PIP) offers a complementary approach to conventional tensile testing, enabling the determination of local mechanical properties with minimal sample preparation.
As these local measurements may be influenced by microstructural variations, this work evaluates the applicability of this technique to extruded 6xxx series aluminium alloys with differing microstructural conditions.
The study focuses on measurement repeatability, sensitivity to test conditions, the influence of surface roughness, and the effect of testing orientations on different microstructural conditions, to ensure representativeness relative to conventional tensile tests.
The main objective is to establish practical guidelines for the implementation of this technique in extrusion environments and to identify key factors affecting the reliability and consistency of the data obtained. |
