| Abstract Scope |
Magnesium (Mg) alloys with rare-earth additions have been widely studied, but Erbium (Er) remains less explored. This study examines solute dissolution and nanoscale clustering in solutionized Mg-Er alloys using Atom Probe Tomography (APT) and High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). Mg-8Er alloys were homogenized, hot-rolled, recrystallized, and solutionized to obtain a single-phase matrix. While FESEM, EBSD, and XRD confirm Er dissolution at the microscale, APT reveals persistent nanoscale clustering, contradicting solubility predictions from theory. HRTEM further confirms Er-rich regions, suggesting segregation persists post-solutionizing. These nano-sized precipitates can impact the mechanical and corrosion properties of Mg alloy systems and further aging response. |
