Abstract Scope |
Traditional steel manufacturing/recycling accounts for a tremendous amount of global CO2 production and energy consumption yearly. This prompts further research into new techniques for solid state recycling, many of which depend on diffusion bonding to create a mechanical bond at elevated temperatures between constituent pieces without melting the metal. Our study shows that roll bonding of scrap steel with the addition of flux allows for bonding between oxidized steel, resulting in formable stock with no traces of the prior oxidation. Unique flux chemistries can be chosen to add or deplete certain alloying elements, allowing for the creating of new phases or compositions at the interface. This paves the way for creating multi-phase multi-layers simply through the addition of flux, allowing for low value oxidized scrap to be transformed into high value stock with unique microstructure and properties. |
