| Abstract Scope |
Pipe components in olefin furnaces produced from cast heat-resistant Fe-Ni-Cr alloys have experienced premature failures during high temperature service by creep fracture, thermal fatigue, and/or thermal shock. Some studies analyzing failures and material susceptibility of these components have suggested that a refined distribution of grain boundary carbides would be beneficial for improving thermal fatigue and creep resistance. As a result, wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) has been proposed to produce pipe components that achieve a more refined microstructure. The present study evaluates the thermal fatigue and creep resistance of WAAM heat-resistant Fe-Ni-Cr materials compared to their cast counterparts. Mechanical test specimens were machined from WAAM Fe-35Cr-45Ni (35/45) and Fe-25Cr-35Ni (25/35) builds. Thermal fatigue testing was performed on the WAAM 25/35 and 35/45 materials using a Gleeble-based procedure previously developed on cast heart-resistant Fe-Ni-Cr alloys. Creep testing was performed on the WAAM 35/45 material under constant load at elevated temperatures. Specimens from gravity cast 35/45 components were also tested in creep and the thermal fatigue results were compared to previously collected data on cast materials. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was also performed on failed WAAM and cast test specimens to understand differences in performance. The results from this study suggested that WAAM is a potentially viable fabrication method to produce pipe components with improved mechanical performance compared to cast. |
