| Abstract Scope |
Oil spills from oil and gas operations pose a significant threat to coastal ecosystems, water resources, and critical infrastructure such as desalination plants, where membrane fouling can disrupt freshwater supplies. Effective remediation technologies are urgently needed to mitigate these risks. This study presents a breakthrough in membrane technology: a high-aspect-ratio inorganic nanofiber membrane specifically engineered for oil/water separation. The innovative use of inorganic nanofibers dramatically enhances anti-fouling properties, enabling the membrane to maintain high permeation flux and long-term operational stability, even under harsh conditions. With superior oil contaminant removal and exceptional durability, this advanced material addresses the limitations of conventional membranes and ensures continuous operation of desalination facilities. Our results highlight the transformative potential of nanofiber-based membranes for efficient marine oil spill remediation and sustainable water treatment, representing a major step toward protecting freshwater resources in coastal communities. |
