| Abstract Scope |
Cracking and delamination remain major challenges in printing Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). These defects develop rapidly during melting and solidification, and the short time scales involved make them difficult to understand using post-build characterization alone. In this work, high-speed synchrotron X-ray imaging is used to directly observe laser processing of Nd-Fe-B. The study focuses on melt-pool behavior, keyhole formation, and the onset of cracking after solidification. Gaussian beam and ring-mode laser conditions are compared to examine how different energy distributions affect melt-pool shape, thermal gradients, and crack formation. The role of rescanning in mitigating cracking is also explored. By directly linking beam-material interaction to defect evolution, this study provides a physics-based framework for understanding cracking in brittle magnetic alloys and for guiding LPBF processing strategies to improve Nd-Fe-B printability. |
