| Abstract Scope |
Metallization of polymer composites is critical for lightning strike protection in aerospace applications, where pure tin (Sn) has been identified as a promising candidate because of its low melting point and high ductility. However, this material faces two issues including low deposition efficiency and poor mechanical strength. As a result, the present study explores the deposition characteristics of an alternative alloy, i.e., Sn–3Ag–0.5Cu (wt.%), often referred to as SAC305 with a higher strength and similar melting point with pure Sn. Compared to pure Sn, SAC305 shows a significantly higher deposition efficiency and a larger coating thickness under the same cold spray conditions. Top coating surface morphology indicates that particle melting occurs, which enhances the deposition efficiency. Coating cross-sectional characterization reveals heterogeneous grain refinement and two distinct pore morphologies. The enhanced deposition efficiency and better bonding behavior in SAC305 is investigated in detail using single particle impact testing. |
