Abstract Scope |
In 2024, the French Manufacturing Research Laboratory (LRF) successfully operated an aluminum electrolysis AP5X pot for 13 days without pot tending machine, due to planned maintenance work. The main challenge was to maintain continuous pot operation without performing any anode changes during this time.To achieve this, all operations had to be carefully planned and adapted. The team worked to regulate the chemical and thermal balance of the pots and developed contingency plans in case of anodic issues.
This period without anode changes necessitated two phases of double anode changes: one before and one after the crane outage. To address the expected rise in heat and bath temperature during the crane downtime, the process teams implemented several innovative solutions to ensure stability and performance, which are presented in details in this article. The expected process theoretical behavior has been closely compared to the obtained operating results. |
