| Abstract Scope |
Understanding dynamic oxidation processes at the atomic scale is essential for developing oxidation-resistant materials for high-temperature applications. In situ environmental transmission electron microscopy (ETEM) enables direct visualization of structural and compositional evolution under reactive environments in real time. Here, we combine atomic-resolution ETEM with density functional theory (DFT) and machine learning–assisted image analysis to investigate the early-stage oxidation of Cu–Ni alloys. This integrated approach captures dynamic processes including elemental segregation, surface reconstruction, oxide nucleation, and competing oxidation pathways, while providing quantitative insight into the mechanisms governing oxidation kinetics. Our results demonstrate how the synergy of in situ ETEM, computation, and data-driven analysis reveals atomic-scale processes inaccessible to conventional ex situ characterization, providing a general framework for studying dynamic materials transformations under realistic reaction conditions. |
