| Abstract Scope |
Laser wire additive manufacturing (LWAM) offers significant opportunities for future energy systems, where lightweight structures, enhanced material performance, and sustainable manufacturing are increasingly required. This work presents two emerging feedstock strategies for laser wire additive manufacturing: forged aluminium wires derived from SS-FSC processing and ceramic-particle-filled cored wires for nickel-based metal matrix composites. The former demonstrates the feasibility of converting a friction-based manufacturing by-product into a value-added feedstock with potential relevance to lightweight hydrogen storage structures, while the latter enables the production of corrosion- and wear-resistant coatings for harsh energy-sector environments. Preliminary results reveal strong process–microstructure relationships governing particle distribution, dissolution, and coating integrity. Together, these studies demonstrate how advanced wire feedstocks can broaden the application space of laser wire additive manufacturing and support the development of future sustainable energy infrastructure. |
