Nanolattice metamaterials have over the past decade demonstrated unprecedented combinations of mechanical properties. Specifically, they have attracted widespread attention by demonstrating unchallenged combinations of high strength and low weight, which they achieve by leveraging miniaturized rational lightweight designs, like truss and plate constructions, to harness extreme mechanical size effects. Spurred by these achievements with tens of-micrometer-size nanolattice specimens, the concept has since been speculated as a vehicle towards exploiting superior nano-properties in macroscopic engineering applications. However, - manufacturing challenges aside – evidence whether the acclaimed nano-properties can actually be preserved across scales has still been missing. Here we present millimeter-size silica glass truss-lattice metamaterials comprised of 4 GPa-strong micro-struts, which were fabricated via high-speed 7x7 multi-focus two-photon polymerization (2PP) laser-printing with a hybrid organic-inorganic pre-glass ink and subsequent thermolysis. We demonstrate ultra-high compressive strengths, which outperform previously reported micro-size nanolattices with the same density and discuss deformation behaviors across scales. |
