Metal oxidation involves coupled chemical reactions, phase transformations, and stress evolution, yet quantifying these processes under dynamic conditions remains challenging. Here, we use precession-assisted in situ 4D-STEM to investigate early-stage zirconium oxidation in dry oxygen and water vapor. A pulsed-reaction workflow temporarily arrests reaction states, enabling reliable 4D-STEM acquisition. Beam precession improves tolerance to specimen mistilt and enables quantitative strain and phase mapping over larger fields of view than conventional TEM-based methods. Our measurements resolve atmosphere-dependent evolution of hydrostatic strain, oxide phase development, and crystallographic texture. Oxygen promotes stronger substrate strain and more ordered oxide growth, whereas water vapor produces weaker strain localization, reduced texture, and enhanced porosity. Reactive molecular dynamics simulations further link these differences to environment-dependent surface reactions and strain-relaxation pathways. This correlative workflow provides a quantitative route for connecting gas chemistry, oxide microstructure, and strain evolution during the initial stages of metal oxidation. |
