Magnesium (Mg) production via multipolar molten magnesium chloride (MgCl2) electrolysis offers improved productivity with bipolar electrodes. However, developing a multiphase reacting-flow model to accurately predict the coupled electrochemical and hydrodynamic phenomena remains a significant modelling challenge. In this work, a two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of a multipolar MgCl2 electrolytic cell is developed in COMSOL Multiphysics to investigate chlorine gas evolution from electrochemical reactions and its influence on electrolyte hydrodynamics. The model couples the secondary current distribution, which accounts for charge-transfer reactions at electrode surfaces using Butler-Volmer equations, with the two-phase Bubbly flow model to simulate the hydrodynamics of electrolyte and chlorine gas. The preliminary results show that Cl2 gas evolution at the anode surface induces buoyancy-driven electrolyte recirculation, significantly influencing the flow field. These findings provide insight into gas-liquid interactions in a multipolar electrolytic cell, which will be useful for cell design and optimisation. |
