High-velocity impact generates extreme stresses, strain rates, and temperatures, making it critical to understand material behavior under such conditions for aerospace, planetary science, and defense applications. In this talk, we present an integrated workflow that combines high-velocity impact experiments, high-fidelity numerical simulations, and ensemble-based data assimilation to characterize material response under extreme loading. A polycrystalline Al 6061-T6 target is impacted by a stainless-steel sphere at 1.6 km/s, and high-speed 3D digital image correlation is used to measure time-resolved, full-field rear-surface deformation. A high-fidelity smoothed-particle hydrodynamics model is then developed to simulate projectile-target interaction, wave propagation, plastic deformation, and damage evolution. Finally, the measured displacement fields are incorporated into the simulations through ensemble-based data assimilation to calibrate uncertain constitutive and equation of state parameters. This workflow connects full-field impact measurements with predictive numerical simulations, reduces reliance on manual calibration, and enables uncertainty-informed characterization of dynamic material response under extreme loading conditions. |
