| Abstract Scope |
Applying electric current during solidification can refine grains and modify phase morphologies, yet conventional post-mortem characterization cannot resolve the transient mechanisms responsible. We have used synchrotron X-ray nanoradiography to directly visualize the response of an eutectic-liquid interface to applied electric current during directional solidification of an Al-33.3wt.%Cu alloy. A custom microassembly enabled simultaneous electrical excitation and high-resolution imaging through repeated melting and solidification cycles with sub-50nm resolution. Periodic current excitation produced reversible interface displacements, ~16μm per cycle, superimposed on furnace driven cooling. Scaling analyses indicate that thermal, electromigration, and magnetohydrodynamic effects cannot explain the rapid interfacial responses observed. These observations demonstrate that electric current modifies the thermodynamic boundary conditions governing interface position without disrupting the diffusion-controlled eutectic growth process. Direct visualization of the transient system response to electric current thus reframes our understanding of the processing method and benchmarks models of field-assisted solidification |
