| Abstract Scope |
Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) coatings on aluminum, magnesium, and titanium are widely used in the aerospace industry to improve the lifespan of parts and are emerging as a surface enhancement for medical implants. PEO has also shown promise for Mg-based devices, reducing initial corrosion rates and hydrogen gas evolution and promoting uniform corrosion. This study aimed to assess the viability of a proprietary PEO coating to delay corrosion of a Mg-Zn-Ca-Mn alloy (ZXM100). 5.85 mm cold-worked and aged ZXM100 bar specimens were PEO-coated to 12 and 25 µm nominal thicknesses at IBC Materials and Technologies. Samples were immersed in a modified Hank’s solution following ASTM F3268 guidelines for in vitro magnesium testing, with removal time points at 14, 28, and 90 days. Following immersion, the samples were assessed for corrosion resistance, corrosion uniformity, and mitigation of initial hydrogen evolution. The 25 µm coating significantly reduced the corrosion rate. |
