| Abstract Scope |
As cold spray is a solid-state joining technology, commonly the joint between cold spray deposition and substrate is the weak link. One critical consideration looking towards the proliferation of cold spray technology is strengthening that bond at the interface. By employing laser surface preparation of aluminum substrate surfaces, EWI has greatly improved interface strength over several traditional methods of preparation (i.e. grit blasting, polishing, etc.). The investigation included laser etching and ablation with variable time in ambient conditions that provided insights for best practices moving towards real world applications. |
