Abstract Scope Three-dimensional printing (3DP) or additive manufacturing (AM) technology is used for on-demand manufacturing of both patient-matched and generic implants. Establishing structure-process-property relationships for different AM techniques is vital to implement them in biomedical and other applications. We aim to understand the relationships between processing conditions, geometry, porosity, and composition on resulting mechanical and application-dependent properties. We use Calcium phosphate (CaP) bioceramic systems in 3D-printed and coating forms to study their physical, chemical, mechanical, and biological properties. AM of ceramics poses a different set of critical issues, making multifunctional patient-specific bone grafts in specific clinical scenarios more challenging. Natural medicinal compounds (NMCs) loading on those CaP scaffolds and coatings shows improved osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and controlled drug release kinetics. The presentation will address the design of next-generation bone tissue engineering scaffolds and surface-modified load-bearing Titanium implants for hip/knee devices based on clinical needs, critical issues we have faced, and challenges we envision.
