| Abstract Scope |
X-ray techniques coupled with the world-class brightness of the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) enable exceptional opportunities for non-destructive, multi-modal studies of nuclear materials. The Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF) provides access to advanced NSLS-II capabilities through a dedicated partnership established for irradiation testing and post-irradiation examination, accelerating the development of materials for existing and next-generation nuclear reactors. Coupling synchrotron resources with in-situ heating capabilities may enable precise, accurate nuclear materials studies. For example, performance of nuclear fuels or reactor components can be better understood by simulating the conditions present in nuclear reactors, such as high temperatures. However, conducting such complex experiments in a user facility like NSLS-II requires serious safety considerations and precautions. In this work, we will present the AI-assisted development of a unique, high-temperature heater that simultaneously acts as radioactive sample encapsulation for improved safety and efficiency of nuclear materials research at NSLS-II. |
