Abstract Scope |
Coal-based Colloidal Composite Binder (3Co-Binder), developed by Central South University, is a novel and efficient binder for iron ore agglomeration that has been successfully applied in industrial practice in China. Derived from humic substances extracted from low-rank coal, it requires a low addition rate (0.1–0.3% on a dry basis), enhances pellet strength, reduces production costs, and increases pellet iron grade by approximately 0.7–1.0% compared to conventional bentonite. The binder’s strong interfacial adhesion to iron ore concentrate was quantitatively characterized at the microscopic scale using in-situ analytical techniques, confirming its superior bonding performance. Its thermal stability during the oxidation roasting process was also evaluated in-situ, revealing that its decomposition behavior closely matches the oxidation kinetics of iron ore. This thermal compatibility promotes coordinated phase evolution during induration and ensures stable performance across a wide temperature range, thereby demonstrating the binder’s effectiveness and reliability in industrial pellet production. |
