| Abstract Scope |
Salt chemistry can strongly influence hydrogen isotope behavior in molten salt systems through isotopic exchange, surface reactions, and gas-surface interactions. In this work, a multiphysics tritium transport framework is developed in FESTIM to investigate the influence of chemical environment on tritium transport and release in a molten salt breeder system. The model incorporates tritium generation, transport in molten salt and structural materials, salt-metal partitioning, isotopic exchange, and surface recombination under different sweep and sparging gas conditions.
The framework is validated against tritium release measurements from the BABY molten salt breeding experiment at MIT PSFC under helium and hydrogen-containing gas environments. The results demonstrate that gas chemistry significantly alters tritium transport, release behavior, and inventories. The validated model provides insight into transport pathways and tritium inventories that cannot be directly inferred from release measurements alone, demonstrating the importance of chemical environment effects in predictive models for future breeder salt systems. |
