| Abstract Scope |
Molten salts are often treated as homogeneous liquids, yet mixtures containing lanthanides or actinides frequently exhibit intermediate range order. In this talk, I will describe a phenomenon we refer to as the “spacer salt effect,” in which introducing ions that do not participate in the multivalent cation network disrupts otherwise fully connected melts such as LaCl₃ or UCl₃. I will also discuss how the Lewis basicity of anions coordinating metal centers shapes the chemistry of radiation generated species, including excess electrons, radical anions like Cl₂˙⁻, and halogenic gases formed through disproportionation, such as Cl₂. Finally, I will examine how ions behave at interfaces under applied potentials and how these interfacial environments perturb liquid structure. |
