| Abstract Scope |
Hybrid particle systems have been proposed to tailor the radiation shielding performance of polymer composites by combining high-density ceramic particles with carbon-based nanomaterials. This study evaluates the gamma-ray attenuation performance of hybrid flax/aramid–epoxy laminates reinforced with a ternary Bi₂O₃–WO₃–graphene oxide (GO) system. Laminates with a 2A/2L stacking sequence were fabricated and tested using Am-241 (59.5 keV) and Cs-137 (661.7 keV) gamma-ray sources. Shielding performance was assessed through the transmission factor (TF) and mass attenuation coefficient (μ/ρ). The Bi₂O₃–WO₃–GO composite exhibited μ/ρ of 0.059 cm²/g and TF of 93.95%, compared with 0.062 cm²/g and 93.66% for the unmodified laminate. These findings indicate that the investigated ternary system did not enhance gamma-ray attenuation under the adopted conditions, highlighting the need to optimize particle content, dispersion, and hybrid composition to improve the shielding efficiency of lightweight multifunctional composites. |
