| Abstract Scope |
Electrochemical measurements in molten salts are increasingly important for applications including molten salt reactors, actinide recovery, corrosion monitoring, and pryoprocessing. Despite widespread use, the interpretation of molten salt electrochemical data remains complicated by the strong influence of electrode materials, salt composition, temperature, and assumptions embedded in commonly applied analytical models. This presentation discusses recent studies of uranium electrochemistry in chloride and fluoride molten salts using conventional and novel electrodes. Potential windows, capacitance, peak resolution, and scan-rate behavior demonstrate the impact of electrode properties on quantitative interrogation of actinide redox chemistry. Emphasis will be placed on the challenges associated with extracting electrochemical parameters from concentrated molten salt systems and on the limitations of applying analytical frameworks developed for idealized conditions. The results provide insight into materials selection for molten salt electrochemistry and highlight considerations necessary for the development of reliable in situ monitoring methods in advanced energy and materials processing systems. |
