Abstract Scope |
Porosity in castings has always been an issue which has generated heated discussion. From the author’s first experiences within the foundry industry 35 years ago and subsequent research career in academia the issues regarding porosity in terms of scale (what is the difference between micro and macro porosity?), provenance (is it hydrogen or shrinkage, entrainment or gas blows?) and effect on properties are still being discussed. A review of the different ideas will be presented and discussed and the some indication as to how foundries deal with porosity will be given. Computer simulations have been used since the early late 80s to predict porosity and some of this history will also be presented. |
