Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) can be viewed as involving three distinct efforts to understand the formation of material microstructures, the effect of microstructure on material properties, and the optimization of material properties for a given application. While these efforts have often been considered separately, there are advantages to viewing ICME as a unified problem defined on an underlying space of all possible material microstructures. Processing steps can be viewed as trajectories through the space, microstructure-property linkages define objective functions on the space, and material selection is reduced to a conventional multi-objective optimization problem. The volume-exchange metric is proposed as part of an ongoing effort to define an expressive and practical notion of distance on the space of microstructures, and is shown to allow the definition of usable coordinate systems in low-dimensional subspaces of the user's choice. The is intended to support the eventual integration of other ICME efforts. |
