| Abstract Scope |
The higher energy neutron environment of advanced fission and fusion reactors require extensive testing to understand how novel materials may react during their lifetime exposures to radiation within these reactors. Current materials testing techniques, such as high neutron flux exposure and heavy ion irradiation, produce either long lived radioisotopes or are unable to create bulk damage for macroscopic post irradiation examination. This research tests the viability of 10-30 MeV proton irradiation as a method for fast, tunable radiation damage testing as a surrogate for neutron irradiation. A beam of 12 MeV protons was used to irradiate 200 µm thick stainless steel 316 samples up to 0.2 dpa to create a plastic deformation mode map to better understand the characteristics of plastic deformation in stainless steel 316 using protons instead of neutrons. Dislocation tangles, stacking faults, twins, etc. were mapped vs. dose and compared to fission neutron irradiation samples. |
