Meeting MS&T26: Materials Science & Technology
Symposium Additive Manufacturing: Architected Structures and Multifunctional Metamaterials
Presentation Title Advances in Additive Manufacturing for Multiscale and Multifunctional Applications
Author(s) Christopher Spadaccini
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Christopher Spadaccini
Abstract Scope In this presentation, we will cover work in advanced and custom additive manufacturing processes for the fabrication of multiscale architected materials and multifunctional devices. We will review the latest in design methods as well as advanced additive micro- and nanomanufacturing techniques to create new material systems with previously unachievable property combinations and a range of functionalities. These processes include projection microstereolithography (PuSL), direct ink writing (DIW), volumetric additive manufacturing (VAM), and two-photon polymerization (2PP). Additionally, new material constituents have been integrated with many of these structures providing advanced function and responsiveness. These include liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) and other materials that can respond to external fields resulting in everything from shaping morphing capability and locomotion to improved dynamic energy absorption. These fabrication processes and concepts can also be applied to functional materials such as those for supercapacitor electrodes, optical components, and fluidic systems.
